Today, the vast range of available food products makes the packaging market both extremely demanding and innovative. Consumers are more and more attentive, not just to product quality, but to packaging design too. That’s why manufacturers often consider using special tamper-evident seals on their packaging to meet customers’ quality requirements, offering them packaging that guarantees a higher level of food safety.
These food safe seals are applied to protect the dosing system and guarantee the packaging hasn’t been opened. The customer can be sure of the conformity of the product, and that it's been protected from tampering since it left the packaging plant, right up to when it’s first opened after being purchased.
How to choose the best tamper evident seal for you?
There are various types of tamper evident seals for cartons and boxes that can be customised to suit the customer's needs and production requirements.
Folded paperboard seal.
This category includes pre-cut seals and "Van Buren" type seals with an outer protective tab.
Pre-cut seals are some of the cheapest and simplest tamper-evident seals to produce, as your carton supplier just has to make a minor change to the paperboard cutting die.
Our Swiss customer Delica, a company in the Migros Group, decided to apply a simple pre-cut seal to its boxes of rice, as shown in the picture.
The food safe seal used for the organic spice cartons shown in this case is a double layer seal. It’s applied on the side where the two outer overlapping paperboard flaps are glued together. The pre-cut shape is removed the first time the box is opened, and then acts as a tab to pull the spout open.
A "Van Buren-type" outer tab seal was chosen for De Ruijter's confectionery decorations and the famous Maizena binder for sauces, which requires a minor change to the cutting die and a dot of glue to fix it in place once the packaging is finished. The tab can be removed when the box is first opened as the top of the tab is pre-cut.
Label type adhesive seal
Unlike the solutions described above, adhesive label seals applied over the spout as a guarantee of inviolability can be customized in terms of the material they're made of, and the colour or decoration used. Another specific machine is required to apply them.
These are used by our customer Rolli Alimentari for example, for their frozen herbs and spices, and are effective on packaging even at very low temperatures. They’re also used for special Régilait powdered milk cartons where they act as a moisture barrier. Contact us to find the best option for your needs!
