Where is the washing product market heading?
Environmental sustainability is a major theme today. Institutions and Associations are taking the stage more and more often to try and convince consumers and businesses alike to change their habits, to protect people’s health, and the ecosystems on which we depend.
To promote awareness and encourage consumers and businesses to adopt sustainable practices, in addition to the SUP (Single Use Plastic) Directive 2019/904, a regulation that will eventually eliminate throwaway plastic, for years the European Union has been working with the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (A.I.S.E.) to promote a change in consumers’ mentality, to encourage them to use more concentrated washing products and gradually reduce the volume of washing products used. Through targeted information campaigns, consumers are encouraged to choose washing products for the number of washes they need. Promoting more concentrated washing products also helps gradually reduce the environmental impact of waste, packaging materials and transportation.
Thanks to these initiatives to promote more concentrated products, in the last 20 years, despite a 23% increase in the number of washes, A.I.S.E. estimates there’s been a 45% reduction in the total volume of washing products used, which translates into 240,000 tonnes of packaging not required, 260 million kilometres of road transport not travelled, and a total 1.4 million tonnes of avoided CO2 emissions.
To be able to implement this effectively, we must give consumers the tools they need to measure the correct amount of washing products in a practical and simple way, as they’re using increasingly concentrated washing products.
What solutions are there for dosing washing products?
Many people are now well aware of the fact that using too much washing powder or liquid doesn’t wash your clothes cleaner, it can actually risk damaging them. Furthermore, it’s harmful to health as the detergent that remains on the clothes can increase the risk of irritation and dermatitis, as well as also obviously having a negative impact on the environment!
But using a reduced dosage for the washing load isn’t effective.
Companies use a mark on the label of the cap on liquid detergents with a table that shows the load and type of dirt on the garments. This quick and easy dosing method is very popular with consumers. But what about washing powders?
Traditional boxes of washing powders or granules with an external scoop take longer to use, and the process is more laborious. After the box has been opened, especially in the case of large packs, you have to find the measuring scoop inside and often you get soap powder on your hands and clothes, especially when the pack is nearly empty. Smaller boxes can be difficult to open and they don’t close well, and it’s all but impossible to avoid spilling the product when pouring it into the narrow tray on the washing machine.
One widely-used alternative is pre-dosed products in capsules, but these are bulky and come with a notable cost for the environment as most are made of plastic, which is not sustainable today.
Tacom washing powder dosing systems
Tacom patented the Pour & Dose system to create a measured dosage 100% paperboard packaging system for a cleaner, more ecological and environmentally-friendly future, which also guarantees savings for companies.
We call it a "smart" dosing system because, once integrated in the paperboard packaging, it lets you pour always the same amount of product using the integrated dosing system, just like the cap on liquid detergent. In this way, with a quick and simple gesture, you have perfectly clean clothes and a lower impact on the environment.
Pour & Dose is an ecological, sustainable and cost-effective paperboard solution: it can be adapted and integrated into all types of carton packaging, dosing powder or granular products without the need to add inconvenient and expensive measuring scoops. Furthermore, the packs can be packed flat before they’re filled, reducing transportation and logistics’ costs.
Pour & Dose, the practical dosing system patented by Tacom, helps turn first-time consumers into loyal customers, and we’re convinced it’ll soon replace less ecological solutions like pods and liquid detergents in the name of a better future for our Planet.
